When it comes to losing weight, our gut plays an underestimated role

July 20th, 2021

An interview with gut coach Bernhard Brendinger

Bernhard Brendinger is a gut coach for successful weight loss and helps especially entrepreneurs and executives on their way to their feel-good body. In this article he tells us about his coaching programme “Gut yourself slim”, the importance of the microbiome to lose weight sustainably and how his own life story has shaped his business.

Bernhard Brendinger’s clients have one thing in common: they are busy, determined and have already achieved a lot. However, a much more important thing, namely their own well-being and health, often falls by the wayside. Who doesn’t know that, you want to lose weight to finally feel good in your own body again, spend carefree time with your children and button up your shirt without it stretching in the wrong places.

However, achieving these goals seems to be an impossible task for many people. Bernhard’s clients have usually already tried a few things themselves in order to conquer their weaker self. Diets and other weight loss cures have not been crowned with lasting success, which is why they trust in the expertise of the gut coach. With his concept of gut-friendly nutrition, Bernhard has already helped many people not only to reach their feel-good weight, but also to maintain it. In this interview, Bernhard explains to us why he focuses on gut health with his clients.

How you can improve the ratio of your Firmicutes (fattening bacteria) and Bacteriodetes (slimming bacteria) and what the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteriodetes in your gut looks like, you can find out through the myBioma microbiome analysis.

Happy to have you Bernhard! Losing weight without dieting or spending a lot of time is your slogan on your website. That sounds almost too good to be true. How can that work?

I have tried many diets in the past and always ended up with the well-known yoyo effect. This is also the reason why I now use a completely different strategy in order to let the kilos melt away sustainably. My clients and I usually don’t have the time to spend hours in the kitchen, which is why I’m a big fan of “healthy fast food”.

Now you’ve made me curious, what strategy do you focus on in your coaching?

As the name of my coaching programme “Darm dich schlank” already says, I have recognised the important role that the composition of one’s own gut flora plays in losing weight sustainably. If you consider that there are about 39 trillion bacteria in the human body and about 30 trillion of them live in the intestines, you can imagine that these bacteria play a role in our digestion.

In your book “Darm dich schlank” you write about “slimming bacteria” and “fattening bacteria”. What is that all about?

Currently, we know of about 1,000 different bacterial strains in the intestine. Broadly speaking, the “firmicutes” are considered to be the “fattening bacteria” because they draw more energy from food and can thus promote fat storage. The “bacteroidetes”, also known as “slimming bacteria”, are better at isolating carbohydrates and removing them from the body without being used. People often talk about good and bad bacteria, but the fact is that we need both strains for a healthy gut environment. In the end, it’ s crucial in what proportion they are in relation to each other and which bacterial strain predominates and thus sets the tone.

What is your recommendation for feeding your gut bacteria?

Our “slimming bacteria” love “real” and unprocessed food. This includes, for instance, polyphenols (secondary plant compounds) which are contained in spinach or chard. But also prebiotic foods such as sweet potatoes, asparagus, onion or linseed are on the menu of these popular bacteria.

“I realised that 80% of success is due to a gut-friendly diet.”

What does working with your clients look like in concrete terms?

Since every client has a different daily routine, I work very individually.Business trips and restaurant visits (outside of Corona) must of course be taken into account in the concept. I also take into consideration different eating habits such as a vegan diet or intolerances. In addition, there is a very intensive communication via messenger or video live call where my clients can ask me their questions daily to discuss all open topics personally. Optionally, I also support my clients during an intestinal rehabilitation.

What goals do your clients pursue?

Of course, this varies greatly from person to person. Usually my clients want to lose between 6-10 kilos, which is quite realistic. Others have banned the scale from their lives due to negative previous experiences, which is why we then measure other success criteria such as the abdominal circumference.

How do your clients manage to maintain their feel-good body after the coaching?

Since there are generally no restrictions in my concept, food cravings and binge eating are a thing of the past. The gut-friendly recipes that I provide to my clients simply taste really good and are prepared within a short time. In addition, I teach them intuitive eating so that they can reach their goals without my help in the future. You can imagine it like a toddler learning to walk. At the beginning you still have to support it and a few weeks later it walks all by itself.

It’s obvious that you are passionate about this topic! How did you come up with your business idea?

I felt uncomfortable in my body for many years and was always striving for a defined body. Although I had been working out like a savage in the gym for many years, I just didn’t manage to achieve this goal. One day I listened to a talk by a psycho-neuro-immunologist and learned about the importance of the gut when it comes to fat burning. I soaked up the knowledge on gut health like a sponge and put the theory into practice. Lo and behold, a few weeks later I couldn’t trust my own reflection. I realised that 80% of success is due to a gut-friendly diet. That was the beginning of my business. Along the way, I studied at the Academy of Naturopathy in Switzerland to become a holistic health consultant. Finally, I wanted to share my knowledge with as many people as possible so that they too could achieve their feel-good body.

Bernhard, thank you so much for your time. If any readers would like to work with you, how can they contact you?

Thank you very much for this nice conversation and your invitation. You can always apply for a free initial consultation via my website I look forward to reading from you.
